62,000 VISITORS, AN 8% INCREASE ON THE 2015 EDITION

PARIS PHOTO confirms its position as world leading photography fair through dynamic sales, high-quality curatorial projects, a versatile programme of signatures and conferences, 1,250 exhibited artists and record breaking attendance.
Paris Photo came to a close for the 20th edition on Sunday, 13 November. This anniversary edition has been critically acclaimed by collectors, cultural institutions, and photographers from all over the world. The fair attracted 62,000 visitors at the Grand Palais in the heart of Paris, which is an 8% increase on last year’s fair, reflecting the public’s growing interest in the photographic medium.

Organised by Reed Expositions France, this year’s PARIS PHOTO brought together 153 galleries and 30 book publishers, including 43 new exhibitors from 30 countries showing more than 1,250 artists. The PRISMES section, initiated in 2015 by directors Florence Bourgeois and Christoph Wiesner, presented 14 artistic projects devoted to serial works and large formats. Located in the Salon d’Honneur of the Grand Palais, PRISMES proved highly successful.
The next edition of PARIS PHOTO will take place from 9 to 12 November 2017. The Grand Palais will host the fair until 2020 before a period of renovations and expansion of up to two years begins.
PARIS PHOTO, PRAISED BY INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND COLLECTORS
The directors, curators, patrons, and members’ groups of 86 international institutions (including 32 first time visitors) were present. Among them, the acquisition committee of Tate Modern (London), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the ICA (London), The Whitechapel Gallery (London), FOAM (Amsterdam), the Fotomuseum (Winthertur), MAMCO (Geneva), MAXXI (Rome), C/O Berlin Foundation (Berlin), Istanbul Modern (Istanbul) and others.
American institutions were widely represented: MoMA (New York), Guggenheim (New York), ICP (New York), LACMA (Los Angeles), J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), SF MoMA (San Francisco), Hammer (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art (Boston), National Gallery (Washington D.C.), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston)…
Institutions from Asia and the Middle East also made the trip to Paris, including the YUZ Museum (Shanghai) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Tel Aviv).
French institutions and numerous museums’ patrons groups were also in attendance: the Louvre, Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Jeu de Paume, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, Maison Rouge Fondation Antoine de Galbert, Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Institut du Monde Arabe, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Le Bal, Le Frac Ile-de-France / Le Plateau…
An established platform for high-profile interactions, Paris Photo has once again been welcomed by gallerists who praised the exceptional bonds they formed with institutions, publishers, and collectors from all over the world.

The New York-based gallery recorded the outstanding sale of a work by Diane Arbus, A Family of their lawn one Sunday in Westchester, Gelatin Silver Print, circa 1969-1971, for €370,000.
Lumière des Roses, Montreuil
“Paris Photo 2016 has been a real success. Among the works that we presented, we achieved sales to two American museums and one Russian museum.”
Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York
There was vivid interest on the stand of the gallery where works by Valérie Belin, Nick Brandt, and Vik Muniz were sold for €36,000, €55,000, and €125,000 respectively.
Galerie 1900-2000, Paris
On its return to Paris Photo, on the first day, the gallery sold the entirety of David Hockney’s series of 20 photographs taken between 1970-1975, at €2,000 per work.
Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, New York
The gallerist is very pleased with his participation in PARIS PHOTO, where he confirms two particularly good sales: Jim Campbell’s work, Paris Metro, sold for $85,000, and a work by artist Robert Currie, sold for $35,000.
Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York
The gallery recorded a very successful edition by selling works by Paul Graham, Viviane Sassen, Richard Avedon, Chuck Close, and Harry Callahan.
Galerie Magnin-A, Paris
The gallery is very satisfied with the 2016 edition of Paris Photo. A selection of works by photographers Malik Sidibé and Seydou Keïta were presented, some of which will be integrated into the collections of private institutions.
Richard Saltoun, London
The gallery, which featured works by Gina Pane, Helena Almeida, and VKhUTEMAS, is very pleased to have sold works to three major American museums.
Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh
Very enthusiastic about this edition, in particular with the sale of three works by New Zealand artist Ben Cauchi, sold for €10,000 each.
Gallery Taik Person, Berlin/Helsinki
Notable success for the gallery which sold works by young Finnish artists such as Hilla Kurki, Anna Reivila, and Niko Luoma and inititated book projects with exhibiting publishers.
Vintage Works, Chalfont
A noteworthy edition for the American gallery which recorded sales for works dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century, offered for €4,000 to €600,000. Among them, a contact sheet of 36 photographs of David Bowie by Helmut Newton was sold for €65,000.
Stanley-Wise Gallery, New York
Two works by David LaChapelle, priced at $20,000 each, were sold, as well as a photograph of Marilyn Monroe shot by Bert Stern for $20,000.
Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, Paris
The gallery achieved significant sales, specifically those of unique works by artists Iris Hutteger and Elene Usdin.
Galerie Eric Dupont, Paris
A strong 2016 edition for the works of Mathieu Pernot as well as the self-taught library of Michel Campeau, which found several buyers.
La Galerie Particulière, Paris
The new Alger series by photographer Stéphane Couturier, presented on the gallery’s booth, encountered considerable success with 15 to 20 prints sold.
Galerie Templon, Paris
The gallery is very pleased with its participation in Paris Photo. Sales were very satisfactory, in particular those of American photographer Gregory Crewdson.
Bruce Silverstein, New York
“Paris Photo 2016 proved to be our best edition,” noted Bruce Silverstein. The gallerist achieved sales of works by artists Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, and Edward Weston.
Flowers Gallery, London
“The quality of the new contacts was quite exceptional. Overall, there was a sustained interest for the works we presented. We quickly sold all of Julie Cockburn’s works.”
Fifty One Gallery, Antwerp
“The attendance was very impressive. Excellent sales among which many works by Belgian artists Harry Gruyaert and Bruno V. Roels.”
Galerie Lelong, Paris
“We achieved a very strong edition and met many Dutch, German, Austrian, and American visitors and collectors. We have here in Paris the best photography fair in the world, one that attracts high-level collectors. It is a true opportunity for us!” commented Nathalie Berghege-Compoint. Very pleased with this edition as the gallery sold works by David Hockney, priced at €28,000 each, among others.
Tasveer, New Delhi
Two foreign museums purchased works by Jamnadas Sharma and Khubiram Gopilal at the gallery’s stand.
Polka Galerie, Paris
The gallery performed well in this edition with sales for each of the presented artists: a series by Luigi Ghieri (10 prints for €2,000), four works by William Klein priced between €30,000 and €35,000 will integrate a Chinese collection, and the unique series by Marchand and Meffre will enter a European collection.
Dittrich & Schlechtriem & V1
The collaborative series by Roger Ballen and Asger Carlsen made up of 37 pieces generated a great deal of interest from collectors.
La Galerie Binome, Paris
A newcomer at PARIS PHOTO, the gallery recorded very good sales, specifically of artists Thibaut Brunet and Mustapha Azeroual whose entire presented series were sold.
Benrubi Gallery, New York
The gallery registered several sales of works by artist Matthew Pillsbury, offered between €7,500 and €12,000, as well as a work by Massimo Vitali for €35,000.
For its first edition, the gallery is pleased with its participation in the fair. The presented artists, including Leïla Alaoui, Giovanni Ozzola, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, drew much interest from collectors.
Chelouch Gallery, Tel Aviv
The gallery shared its enthusiasm for Paris Photo after having sold works by three of the presented artists: Uri Gershurni, Nick Evron, and Miki Krastman.
Galerie Anita Beckers, Frankfurt
The gallery is very satisfied with its participation in Paris Photo. It achieved sales of works by Christiane Feser, including one featured in the JP Morgan Collector’s Path.
Bendana Pinel, Paris
A great edition for the gallery, which sold two works by Caio Reisewitz, each for €27,000, as well as the entirety of the works by Miguel Rothschild, unique pieces, at €17,500 each.
A MEMORABLE PRISMES SECTION
The PRISMES section devoted to the presentation of exceptional artworks, large formats, series, and installations, explored the many uses of the photographic medium. Inaugurated in 2015, PRISMES was more widely installed in the Salon d’Honneur this year.
The 14 presented projects were well received. Sales included:
- The triptych Les Mécaniques 1 by young artist Noémie Goudal, represented by Les Filles du Calvaire.
- The work All the Missiles Are One Missiles by Polish artist Zofia Kulik, showcased by the gallery Taik Person & ZAK | BRANICKA, was bought by a private collector for €190,000, who then donated it to a foreign cultural institution.
- Foreign institutions also showed strong interest in other works in PRISMES, notably Issei Suda’s series Bon-odori Nishimonei, Akita, Japan, 1976.

THE PENCIL OF CULTURE 10 YEARS OF ACQUISITIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE CENTRE POMPIDOU

Paris Photo, thanks to the support of J.P. Morgan was pleased to welcome the exhibition “Pencil of Culture” in which the Centre Pompidou presented highlights of 10 years of acquisitions by the museum’s photography department.
PARIS PHOTO AND THE PHOTOBOOK
“Paris Photo 1997-2016, Parcours”, published with Xavier Barral Éditions, was released at the fair in hommage to the 20 editions of Paris Photo. The special edition presents a collection of archival images, texts and the testimonies of major figures in the world of photography that contributed to the making of the history of Paris Photo.
Over 300 signature sessions with artists including William Klein, Elliott Erwitt, Sabien Wiess, Agnès Varda, Martin Parr, among many others were held in the book sector over the course of the 4 days of the fair to the delight of visitors and photography enthusiasts present in large numbers at the fair.
The Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards were attributed to the winners of the categories PhotoBook of the Year awarded to Gregory Halpern
for ZZYZX (MACK, London, 2016), Photography Catalogue awarded to Karolina Puchała-Rojek and Karolina Ziębińska-Lewandowska for “Wojciech Zamecznik: Photo-graphics” (Fundacja Archeologia Fotografii, Warsaw, 2015), and First PhotoBook of the the Year awarded to Michael Christopher Brown for “Libyan Sugar” (Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe, 2016) with a prize of $10 000.
PARIS PHOTO EXTENDS ITS GRATITUDE TO ITS PARTNERS FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT
“Photoplay : Pictures-in-Pictures” presented by J.P. Morgan, official partner for the 6th consecutive year, highlighted one of the most important collections of corporate photography in the world.
BMW, official partner since 2011, confirmed its support of photography and young talent, with the BMW Residency at Musée Nicéphore Niepce.
Paris Photo’s associate partners proposed additional rich and varying content for the fair: Leica presented for the first time at Paris Photo the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Leica Newcomer Award, Huawei presented the #OO Gallery, and Pernod Ricard exhibited a carte blanche by Omar Victor Diop.
Paris Photo also thanks it programming partners: Aperture Foundation for its continuing support for the PhotoBook Awards, SNCF-Gares & Connexions for the carte blanche given to Raphaël Dallaporta and Radio Nova for the radio programme, “Photography in Words”.
